Animal Welfare:
AAALAC, AALAS, & PHS assurance
Animal welfare plays a critical role in scientific research, education, and biomedical advancement. Ethical treatment of animals is not only a moral responsibility but also essential for producing reliable, high quality scientific data. Several organizations help ensure that research institutions uphold the highest standards of animal care. Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and Public Health Service (PHS) Assurance.
The Importance of AAALAC Accreditation
AAALAC is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals through voluntary accreditation. AAALAC accreditation represents a higher standard of excellence. Institutions that achieve AAALAC accreditation demonstrate that they go beyond minimum legal requirements. They commit to rigorous program reviews, facility inspections, veterinary oversight, and ongoing improvement. This accreditation strengthens trust, enhances institutional credibility, and assures that animal welfare is a top priority. TransPharm Preclinical Solutions has been an AAALAC accredited facility since Oct. 2009. Our program consistently ranks in the top 2%. Our file number is 001301
The Role of AALAS
AALAS focuses on education, training, and certification for professionals working in laboratory animal care and use. Serving as a forum for the exchange of information and expertise in the care and use of laboratory animals, AALAS ensures that personnel responsible for animal care are properly trained and competent. Well-trained staff are the foundation of strong animal welfare programs. Knowledge of species-specific care, enrichment, handling techniques, anesthesia, and regulatory compliance reduces stress or pain for animals while also improving research integrity.
AALAS supports a culture of professionalism and continuous learning, which directly benefits both animals and scientific outcomes. This proactive approach protects animals and strengthens the overall research environment. AALAS has State and National membership options and Dan Ross, President and CEO of TransPharm Preclinical Solutions was President of the Michigan Branch in 2001. Mr. Ross also sat on a panel at the District 5 level.
Understanding PHS Assurance
PHS Assurance applies to institutions that receive funding from agencies within the U.S. Public Health Service. Being PHS Assured means the institution formally commits to following federal regulations and adhering to the standards outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Institutions must establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), review and approve animal use protocols, ensure appropriate veterinary care, report noncompliance, and provide personal training to maintain PHS assurance. This system creates accountability and structured oversight, ensuring ethical review of everything animal related. TransPharm Preclinical Solutions has had PHS assurance since June 2014, Assurance # A4707-01
Why Does This Matter
Together, AAALAC accreditation, AALAS, and PHS assurance form a comprehensive framework for responsible animal research. AAALAC promotes programmatic excellence, AALAS focuses on professional competency, and PHS Assurance ensures oversight and federal compliance. While strengthening the quality and credibility of scientific research, these systems protect animal welfare. Humane care reduces stress related variables that can compromise data, and transparent oversight builds public confidence. Strong animal welfare programs are not obstacles to research; they are essential components of responsible science. Ultimately, responsible animal welfare practices reflect a commitment to ethics, professionalism, and scientific advancement.
TransPharm Preclinical Solutions has a very talented Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) with most members sitting on the committee since 2008. The IACUC is responsible for adherence to AAALAC, AALAS and PHS assurance within our facility. Our IACUC meets in January and June every year for a review of our Animal Welfare program and inspection of our facility. Our IACUC is engaged at every level and has been praised by AAALAC for our attention to detail and our desire to go above and beyond.
